Coronavirus and Social Gatherings

The coronavirus has spread across to many countries across the world and halting social gatherings. Countries are currently on lock down to avoid the spread of the virus on a higher scale. The approach is reasonable due to the virus’s rapid growth. But it doesn’t seem to have any affects on the millennial.

From what I have seen in Hong Kong, shutting down schools has done nothing in regards to the older students. Kindergartens and Primary students have been isolated in their homes. The influence of their parents has contained their social interactions with others. With strict control, the parents can manage the epidemic efficiently as their child does not have the freedom of doing activities on their own, like for example going outside.

The thing that is irritating me at the moment are the older students. They are not taking care at this current time. It seems that they are using this time as a holiday, to spend more time doing the activities they love, for example basketball. I am not saying all older students are like this, however on journeys to and from work, I see a majority of them out.

The Problem

When a country is on lock down and recommends isolating yourself to avoid the risk of being affected by the virus, it means you should avoid big public gatherings. The only social thing I do nowadays is going to the gym, which I use a mask and disinfect my workout stations as I workout.

There are many millennials who are out there having fun and not understanding the risks of being infected. We all have a need and desire to socialise, but they need to take in consideration the situation we are in. I saw in the news today about Americans still going on Spring break. I don’t think this is the right time to party folks!

It starts from the top. Parents need to take more control of their kid’s health, no matter what the age. Young adults and children need to be educated about the risks of contamination. The virus growing rapidly in many other countries. We all need to work together, educate each other on how to keep safe and healthy.

The Frustration

The whole epidemic has been frustrating. None of us want to be only restricted to our homes. I feel for my students who aren’t allowed to even go outside. I’d go crazy if I was kept indoors for so long!

Social events have taken their toll as well. Many of the events have either been cancelled or rescheduled at a later date. I was looking forward to the Euros 2020 but it was recently announced that the football tournament has been moved forward to 2021. I wonder if the Olympics is next.

There is not much we can do at this moment. We need to keep ourselves busy and making the most of our free time at home. Like what I am doing now, writing a blog! The coronavirus will ease off and social gatherings can become a thing once again. Everyone stay safe and keep being proactive.
