Long Vowel Sounds Tips
It is not easy introducing the concept to a child new sounds that do not follow the single sound process. It can take a while for a student to build up their recognition of these sounds. Time and practiced will prevail.
The greatest advice I can give is to use flashcards and get the students to practice recognising the sounds before trying out words containing the sound. When they are used to the combinations, they will be able to blend new words containing the sound without giving a second thought.
Transitioning from CVC/CVCC to Long Vowels
This is not an easy task for young learners. They are used to words that are presented to them in the CVC or CVCC format. All the words contain single sounds, making it easy to blend. Long vowel sounds are the complete opposite. They require more recognition and awareness of the letter combinations.
To make it easier for students to get used to long vowel sounds, stick to basic words that contain no more than 5 letters. Build up their confidence before attempting longer words. Split up the words to help with their final blend. I usually tell my students to colour in the long vowel part of the word, to show their awareness!
